Solidarity for “Eve Teasing” Victims in Bangladesh

The BBC reported increases in “Eve Teasing” in Bangladesh has led to an increased incidence of suicide among young women. According to the article, this form of sexual harassment is completely unchecked and constitutes “little rapes,” and is particularly damaging in Bangladesh because of weak sexual harassment laws. Victims are often stalked and ridiculed daily with little to no recourse. Many of the victims of Eve Teasing feel suicide is the only way out. Continue reading

Tiger conservation in Bangladesh


Importance and challenges

Tiger, symbol of the beast and beauty, is a threatened species worldwide. Recent estimate shows that tigers only occupy 7% of their historic Asian range and about 4000 are left in the wild (Dinerstein et al. 2007). Aside from this alarming tiger status worldwide, Bangladesh possesses a relatively good number of them, mostly concentrated in the Sundarbans. Joint India and Bangladesh tiger census-2004 (using pugmark counting) estimated that there are 419 (121 male and 298 female) tigers in Bangladesh Sundarbans. Continue reading

Bangladesh okays strict law to protect endangered animals


Bangladesh has approved a law that sets jail terms of up to 12 years for deliberately killing tigers and other wild animals endangered in the South Asian country

A recent cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also agreed to provide reparations to the families of victims killed or maimed by the animals that range between 100,000 taka ($1,415) and 50,000 taka.

Each family will also get 25,000 taka as compensation if wild animals destroy assets such as houses and crops. Continue reading

Sexual Harassment Leads to Suicide In Bangladesh


A new craze in Bangladesh, “eve teasing” (a euphemism for sexual harassment), led the government to declare June 13, “Eve Teasing Protection Day.”  The announcement came in the wake of increasing worry over the numbers of women and girls who have committed suicide as a direct result of this phenomenon.  A human rights organization said that 14 women have killed themselves over the past four months because of “eve teasing,” and that three men who publicly protested the harassment have also been killed.
