Shades of Independence

FOR a young student or a professional today, life should be so much more than being stuck inside a room and playing play station or an x-box, flipping through TV channels or trying to synchronies dates and time on the electronic organizer. With the rapid changing and shifting of statuses on Face book and updating the world with their life-changing decisions on Twitter, it sure is clear, that the generation today is all for a digital nation. Of course, on the other side of things, there are those who face the harsh realities of this cruel world slightly more than others, forcing them to work in warehouses, coal-mines, pull rickshaws on the street and do so much more so as to survive. Despite the ever-growing social and economical gaps between the two worlds of young people living in this country filled with conflicts, each and every one of them still dares to dream of making lives better. Abed, Yunus among world’s top 100

Two renowned Bangladeshis have been included in a list of ‘Top 100 Individuals’ who have committed themselves to improve the lives of girls and women around the world.

Founder of Grameen Bank and Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder and chairperson of Brac, were included in the list prepared by US-based global advocacy organisation Women Deliver, said a press release. Continue reading

HC : Deploy police, protect Mahasthangarh

Mubarak backers open fire at protesters

An Egyptian army soldier tries to contain thousands of pro-government supporters of President Hosni Mubarak pushing their way towards Tahrir square past a military check point in central Cairo February 2.

Supporters of President Hosni Mubarak opened fire on Thursday on protesters camped out in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, wounding at least seven, witnesses said.

 Al Arabiya television quoted a doctor at the scene as saying one protester was killed when a barrage of gunfire rang out across the square at around 0400 am (9 p.m. EST Wednesday). Another witness said as many as 15 people had been wounded. Continue reading

Cop killed, 100 others injured as over 30,000 people stage violent protest against airport on Arial Beel

A policeman was killed and about 100 others were injured when people protesting the proposed Bangabandhu International Airport on Arial Beel locked in series of clashes with police on Dhaka-Mawa highway in Munshiganj yesterday.

Doctors declared Sub-Inspector Motiur Rahman, 53, dead when he was rushed to Mitford Hospital with critical injuries from the clashes.

The demonstrators torched a police outpost and a journalist’s motorcycle at Hashara, Sreenagar.

The Arial Beel Rakkha Committee enforced blockade on the highway around 9:00am as per its announcement on January 26. Continue reading
